PBI-Guatemala accompanies the Ch’orti’ Maya Indigenous Council of Olopa, Chiquimula at Magistrates’ Court hearing

The Peace Brigades International-Guatemala Project has posted on social media:

“On 30 July, #PBI is accompanying the Ch’orti’ Maya Indigenous Council of Olopa, Chiquimula, as they appear before the Magistrates’ Court in the same municipality. Its members attended a hearing convened to clarify allegations regarding the Council’s alleged acceptance of money as part of a supposed agreement that would allow the Manantiales mine to operate with the consent of the indigenous authorities.

The proceedings could not take place due to the failure of the parties linked to the mining company to appear.

The Council has been resisting the mine’s operations for over 10 years, as they have brought pollution and divisions to neighbouring communities.”

Peace Brigades International has accompanied the Maya Ch’orti’ Indigenous Council of Olopa Chiquimula since June 2021.
