Colombia Overview

Colombia Since 1994, Peace Brigades International‑Colombia Project (PBI-Colombia) has worked in one of Latin America’s most dynamic and complex human-rights settings: the Republic of Colombia. Embedded across Bogotá, Barrancabermeja and Apartadó, the project accompanies grassroots organisations, indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities, human-rights defenders and peace-builders in a context of ongoing armed conflict, extractive pressures, large-scale displacement and environmental degradation. see more

The country presents a paradox of remarkable resilience and deep structural fragility. On one hand, Colombia hosts rich biodiversity, vibrant cultural traditions and a spirited civil-society movement emerging from decades of armed internal conflict. On the other hand the region continues to experience serious human rights challenges: forced disappearances, paramilitary and state violence, environmental harm tied to mining, oil and dam-projects, and the displacement of rural communities and indigenous territories. For example, PBI-Canada has documented Canadian-linked oil and gas exploration in Colombia that raises environmental and human-rights concerns. see more

ColombiaPBI-Colombia’s intervention brings international presence, advocacy and accompaniment to a landscape where local actors can be under threat simply for articulating their rights. Through protective accompaniment, field-based volunteers work alongside defenders in conflict-affected regions; at the same time PBI engages the international community to amplify those voices and press for accountability. see more

For our Canadian supporters and allies, Colombia offers a unique window into the intersections of global business, environment and human rights. Canadian companies hold billions of dollars in mining and energy assets in Colombia, and the Canadian government has sent equipment and exports which raise questions of corporate and state responsibility in human-rights contexts. see more
