On March 14, PBI-Guatemala posted: “PBI accompanies members of the Council of Communities of Retalhuleu (CCR) criminalized for defending the right to water to sign the book in the MP [Public Ministry]. The hearing scheduled for today was suspended.”

Abelino Salvador Mejía Cancino, a member of the CCR, spoke on a PBI-Canada organized webinar that took place yesterday. It focused on the defending the human right to water from harm by the sugar industry in Guatemala.

A 14-minute audio clip of Abelino’s introductory comments (translated into English) on that webinar can be heard below.

During the webinar Abelino highlighted the importance of visibility and stated: “We ask that the international community watch very closely what happens. You can send diplomatic support for the hearings so that they see we do have support.”

We continue to follow this situation closely.
