PBI-Guatemala accompanies the Maya Ch’orti’ Councils of Olopa and San Juan Ermita, the Indigenous Community of San Francisco Quezaltepeque on Indigenous Resistance Day

On October 13, the Peace Brigades International-Guatemala Project posted on social media:

“Today, #PBI is accompanying the Maya Ch’orti’ Councils of Olopa and San Juan Ermita, as well as the Indigenous Community of San Francisco Quezaltepeque, at a gathering of Maya Ch’orti’ communities from Chiquimula. The event commemorates #IndigenousResistanceDay—a resistance that has endured from the Spanish invasion to the present day.

During the event, the communities reflected on the struggles they have led, including the Plurinational Uprising movement, the defense of their territory, and the recognition of their ancestral lands.

The gathering took place at the Chiquimula Governor’s Office, where Indigenous authorities were invited to raise the flag of the four peoples alongside the Governor. Through an official resolution, the Governor acknowledged the role of cultural identity in history, mandating that public institutions contribute to recognizing the country’s cultural diversity.”
