The Peasant Movement of the Philippines (Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas – KMP) has posted on social media their condemnation of “the continuing surveillance and harassment” of KMP National Chairperson, Danilo “Ka Daning” Ramos.
KMP describes several incidents of concern:
– “On September 12, six men in civilian clothes went to [the city of] Malolos and sought out Ramos. They initially introduced themselves as farmers who wanted to speak with him. However, they later told a local government official that they were members of the military from the ‘General Headquarters.’”
– “On the same day, several other suspicious individuals were observed monitoring or loitering around the residences of Ramos’s relatives.”
– “On September 14, three of the six men returned and spoke with another group of local officials, again asking about farmer organizations in the area.”
The KMP also notes: “Ramos has faced similar incidents of surveillance and harassment, including more recently in August 2023 and January 2024.”
These incidents took place after a massive anti-corruption protest in Malolos on August 31 where Ramos was among the leading figures.
The KMP states: “Agrarian concerns and the exercise of democratic rights are not matters for military surveillance or intervention. Farmers have the constitutional right to organize and protest against decades-long injustice and landlessness.”
