PBI-Mexico calls for a strengthening of protection frameworks following Front Line Defenders report on attacks against HRDs

The Peace Brigades International-Mexico Project has posted on social media:

“Last Monday @FrontLineHRD published its Global Analysis 2025/2026 on the situation of human rights defenders at risk.

From @PBI_Mexico, we want to highlight some aspects of particular concern.

Here is the full report: http://zurl.co/0K9Hd

First and foremost, it is extremely concerning that the number of human rights defenders killed in Mexico has increased compared to the previous period, rising from 32 to 43, surpassed only by Colombia and matching the figures for Palestine.

Special attention should be paid to the fact that, alongside the murders, the criminalization and use of criminal law was the second greatest threat faced by human rights defenders in the region.

Finally, the communities, organizations, and individuals defending the land and territory, along with those defending the rights of indigenous peoples and communities, are the areas of rights defense most under threat.

From @PBI_Mexico, we call for reversing these trends by strengthening national and international protection frameworks, addressing the structural impunity of crimes against human rights defenders, and publicly recognizing the legitimate right to defend rights.”

Peace Brigades International-Canada shares the concerns of our colleagues at PBI-Mexico and continues to collaborate with them to call on the Government of Canada to help the Government of Mexico to strengthen the Protection Mechanism for human rights defenders and journalists in Mexico.
