Criterio.hn reports: “The country’s trade union organizations affiliated to the Unitary Federation of Workers of Honduras (FUTH), have so far counted some 15,000 illegal dismissals of state workers and some 500 against union leaders. The panorama of defenselessness for the working class is so delicate that cases of dismissals have been raised before international entities.”
The article also notes that the Union of Workers of the Ministry of Social Development (Sitrasedesol) has mentioned “patterns of harassment, persecution and violation of freedom of association”.
The Federación Unitaria de Trabajadores de Honduras (FUTH) is affiliated with the Confederación Unitaria de Trabajadores de Honduras (CUTH). Along with the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), the CUTH is affiliated with the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC).
In their 2026 report, ITUC listed Honduras under “No Guarantee of Rights”. In their 2024 report, ITUC noted: “In 2024, trade unionists died for their trade union activism in six countries: Bangladesh, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, the Philippines, and the Republic of Korea.” In their 2023 report, ITUC documented: “In Honduras, it remained very difficult for workers to organise, as they faced intimidation and union-busting practices.” Their 2022 report also noted: “In many countries, including Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala and Honduras, trade unionists and workers experienced violent attacks.” And in 2021, ITUC reported: “In Honduras, agricultural workers and their representatives were stuck in prolonged disputes over union recognition with their employer.”
The Washington, DC-based Freedom House report on Honduras in 2026 also gives Honduras a low score for labour rights.
Prior to this, between the June 2009 coup and November 2015, more than 30 trade unionists have been killed in Honduras.
We continue to follow this situation.
