We hope that you will be able to join us this Sunday March 13th at 2:30 pm EDT to hear from Abelino Salvador Mejía talk about the situation for environmental defenders speaking against the harms caused by the sugar industry in Guatemala.

Notably, Canada was the largest importer of sugar from Guatemala in 2020.

PBI-Guatemala has posted: “On the South Coast, agribusiness hoards water and diverts riverbeds, leaving communities without access to water. In addition, the fumigation carried out without any type of control causes illnesses in people and losses in crops.”

More than 50 rivers have been diverted for agribusiness on the South Coast.

Abelino has spoken against this violation of the human right to water.

On March 14, the day after he joins our webinar, he will be in court with three other colleagues all of whom have been criminalized by sugar mills.
