On October 8, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted this resolution recognizing the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

Today, David R. Boyd, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights and the environment, tweeted the final text of that resolution.

The resolution can be read in multiple languages here.

It also recognizes that “the exercise of human rights, including the rights to seek, receive and impart information, to participate effectively in the conduct of government and public affairs and in environmental decision-making and to an effective remedy, is vital to the protection of a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.”

Following its passage, Boyd commented:

“This resolution is especially important for all of the environmental human rights defenders working, often at great personal risk, to safeguard the land, air, water and ecosystems that we all depend on.”

Boyd further urged leaders at the UN COP26 climate summit to put human rights at the centre of their actions.
