Canada should act on UN resolution on Wet’suwet’en land defenders

Add your name to this petition and an email will automatically be sent to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The Trudeau government is stepping up its efforts to win a vote on June 17th for a seat on the United Nations Security Council.

And yet it has ignored a resolution by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination calling on Canada to stop construction on the Coastal GasLink fracked gas pipeline until the Wet’suwet’en people give their free, prior and informed consent for this megaproject.

Construction on the pipeline has even continued during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Please call on the Prime Minister to act immediately on this United Nations resolution.

Take action to support Wet’suwet’en land defenders! You can also add your own message in this email to the Prime Minister!

Absolutely for sure. This and the UN Nuclear Ban Treaty – Canada needs to act to be taken seriously as a contender for a spot on the security council. We need to see that independent and feminist foreign policy we claim to have -and human rights for Indigenous nations in Canada is fundamental to justice.

The government of Canada needs to immediately stop construction on the Coastal Gaslink pipeline. The Wet’suwet’en people have the right to determine what happens in their land.

Our top leaders are not protecting their people’s wishes. Both PM Trudeau and Premier Horgan have previously made statements of heartfelt concern and support for the rights and well-being of their First Nations constituents. But then do not back these with actions. Both made statements backing of UNDRIP principles. In both UNDRIP and the Canadian Constitution are written the principles FREE PRIOR and INFORMED CONSENT. Trudeau and Horgan have forgotten what CONSENT means. It seems that when entrenched and powerful economic forces like oil and gas want the resources, our leaders cave in, regardless what the people want. The question now has become critical to the climate crisis–are we willing to stop the drilling and digging before the world collapses?
